The Ones

Young people are all different. They are all unique and bring with them a unique set of needs. There is no neat formula for how to support a young person or guarantee a desired outcome. With each young person that we work with we embark on a separate journey. Each young person is important to us and as we travel alongside them we seek out ways to celebrate and encourage their individuality.

One young woman I have been working with has been having a particularly difficult time recently which has left her struggling to hang on to any positive self-image or confidence. One of the things she talks about that makes her happy is drawing so I started thinking about how I could maybe use this to do something to encourage her. I got in touch with a friend, Alethea Dacre, who is a textile designer who generously agreed to volunteer her time and expertise to run some workshops with the young woman, showing her what she does and helping her design something of her own. We had our first session this week and it was brilliant. Alethea did a great job of explaining what she does and enabling and inspiring the young woman to create her own design which she has made an impressive start with. At the end of the session the young woman was beaming and said that no-one had ever done anything like this for her before. These sessions wont solve her problems but hopefully they will give her some enjoyment, encourage her in her gifts and make her feel special.
